The green-belly stink bug Dichelops melacanthus (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is one of the most important pests that occur on maize initial vegetative stages in Southern Brazil. In addition to preventive seed treatment with insecticides, the use of tolerant maize genotypes may be an alternative to minimize the damage caused by this pest. Given this, the objective of this work was to evaluate the initial damage caused by D. melacanthus on different maize genotypes. The maize genotypes evaluated were the open pollinated SCS 154 Fortuna, SCS 155 Catarina and SCS 156 Colorado; the conventional hybrid P30F53 and the transgenic hybrids P30F53 HR and P30F53 VYH. Plants from these genotypes were cultivated in plastic pots placed on a greenhouse. Approximately 10 days after emergence, on V2 stage, each plant was infested with one D. melacanthus adult. The stink bugs were starved for 24 h before infestation, and were confined in the stalk region with a voile ?cage?, for two consecutive days. For each genotype 10 infested and 10 non-infested plants were used. Two weeks after insects removal, plants height (soil up to last expanded leaf ring), stalk diameter and aerial dry mass were evaluated. The reduction on height, stalk diameter and dry mass was then calculated, and a damage category was attributed to infested plants based on visual scale of symptoms or injuries (0 to 4). Except for SC 155 Catarina, plants height was reduced in more than 14%. The stalk diameter of SCS 156 Colorado and P30F53 was reduced in 12.94 and 22.9%, respectively.
